Why Speech Therapy?

Communication is one of a child’s most fundamental abilities. Struggles in developing speech, expressing oneself, or understanding others can impact a child’s relationships and daily experiences. We understand these challenges and are here to help! Our versatile team of dedicated speech therapists is committed to providing the best care in Northwest Arkansas, ensuring your child receives the support they need to thrive at home, school, and in the community.

Who Can Benefit from Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy is vital to assist children who struggle to communicate. There are a variety of medical diagnoses that can be improved with speech therapy, including but not limited to Autism, pediatric feeding disorders, expressive and receptive language delays, and articulation disorders.

Children can usually be expected to combine words between 12-24 months and speak in short sentences by two-three years of age. If they don’t reach these developmental milestones, speech therapy should be considered to help them catch up. Children of any age who struggle to speak clearly, understandably, and fluently can improve these abilities with speech therapy.

How Speech Therapy Can Help

Our speech therapists have an extensive understanding of language and the ability to speak and communicate. They have many years of education and experience to tap into as they assist your child in gaining speech skills. The following abilities are frequently addressed by speech therapists in our clinic:

  • Expressive Language: making requests, asking or answering questions, describing what has happened, and expressing oneself through writing, AAC, or sign language.
  • Receptive Language: grasping the meaning of sounds, words, gestures, and being able to follow directions.
  • Speech Production/Articulation: producing sounds, words, and sentences correctly and clearly in conversation.
  • Literacy: phonemic awareness, reading, and writing skills.
  • Fluency: speaking smoothly, with continuity and without effort.
  • Voice: overcoming voice problems such as poor quality, incorrect pitch, or insufficient loudness.
  • Oral Motor and Myofunctional: correcting oral posture and movement patterns of the face or mouth with retraining of the muscles.
  • Social Skills: starting and maintaining conversations, interacting, and responding appropriately with others.
  • AAC: providing the development of language through means other than verbal output.

A Typical Speech Therapy Session Includes:

After qualifying for therapy in the initial speech evaluation, your child can begin therapy with us! The first session will begin with you receiving a copy of your child’s therapy evaluation report and going over the report with the therapist. Afterwards, your child will accompany their therapist into the treatment area, usually from the entrance waiting room. Our therapy sessions are designed to be fun and motivating for the children. To someone who isn’t a therapist it often just looks like play! But shhh… don’t tell the kiddos, they are actually working

The session will last between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the appointment time and the toleration of the child. The therapist and your child will meet you in the exit waiting room 5-7 minutes before the end time to discuss the session, goals, progress, and homework.
